


ABOUT
Hazel Frankel is an artist, calligrapher, author and teacher who holds MAs in Fine Arts and English (University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg), and a PhD in Writing (University of Sheffield Hallam, U K). Frankel’s Creative Writing MA (2004-6) lead the publication of a poetry collection Drawing from Memory, and the novel Counting Sleeping Beauties. Her doctoral submission (2013) focused on the Yiddish poems of David Fram, reflecting on his journey away from Eastern Europe to South Africa, his feelings of longing for home after his arrival, and his response to the Holocaust . She has held several solo and group shows, and her paintings are held in numerous private collections. Currently a Research Associate at Wits, Frankel’s painterly and literary interests intertwine to highlight aspects of cultural and spiritual memory, migration and exile.
